Blackalicious is a hip-hop duo from Sacramento, California. In “Deception” (1999), Gift of Gab tells a story about a young rapper with big dreams. His music become popular really quickly, and he becomes a celebrity overnight. He forgets his true identity and becomes greedy. The young rapper’s love of money destroys his life because his greed deceives him.

Gift of Gab explains that:

His first single was an overnight success hit
And now he went from wearing rags to the best fits
All his new acquaintances, gassed his head, taking it
To the point where he lost proper perspective.

Here are some important vocabulary words about money and greed that you will need to understand the song:

  • lavish (adjective) – more than enough; spending more money than necessary. Many celebrities have big homes, fancy cars and lavish lifestyles.
  • make a living (verb phrase) – your main source of income or money; your job. People go to college and university to make a good living.
  • pay your dues (verb, idiom) – to do an unenjoyable task in order to get something valuable. Many rappers do not become celebrities quickly. Rappers have to pay their dues and work very hard in order to become famous.
  • nine-to-five (noun) – a typical office job. Most office jobs begin at 9 am and end at 5 pm. A nine-to-five is very secure work, but it can be boring and unsatisfying.
  • best fits (noun, slang) -the best clothes. If you are not wearing the best fits, you are wearing rags, which are low quality clothes.
  • go platinum (verb, slang) – to sell one million records or albums. Very talented and successful musicians sell platinum records, but it is very difficult to go platinum.
  • shopping spree (noun) – shopping and buying many things in a short amount of time.
  • broke (adjective) – to have very little or no money. If you are broke, you cannot go on a shopping spree.

Would you rather have a lavish lifestyle but be stressed out? Would you rather be broke and happy? Do you want to make a living with a nine-to-five? Are shopping sprees OK, or wasteful? Please write your comments below!
