“Paper Planes” is a song by British musician M.I.A. from her second studio album, Kala (2007). The song ignited wide acclaim upon its release, and contemporary critics complimented the musical direction as well as the subversive, unconventional subject matter of the piece, citing its chorus and lyrical humor in the promotion of globalization. The single peaked in the Top 20 in Belgium, Denmark, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. M.I.A has expressed surprise at the song’s wide commercial success, telling Rolling Stone in October 2008, “I always took pride in being a little underground – it really is a very unlikely record to cross over” (adpated from Wikipedia).

All I want to do is BANG BANG BANG
And CLICK KA-CHING
And take your money

Grammar: Zero Conditional

I fly like paper. Get high like planes.
If you catch me at the border, I got visas in my name.
If you come around here, I make them all day.
I get one done in a second if you wait.

The song’s first verse has several examples of some grammar called the zero conditional. A conditional sentence usually contains the words if/when and then, and we use it to discuss the results of a situation, fact or idea. Use the zero conditional to discuss a result that is always true, such as simple, scientific facts. The result of the condition is 100% true, and the result never changes.

In order to make the zero conditional, use the simple present verb tense.

If + subject + simple present verb, subject + simple present  verb.

  • If you catch me at the border, have visas in my  name.
  • If you come around here,  make them all day.
  • If you wait, get one done in a second.

In the above examples, the IF CONDITION is first, and the result is second. In this case, use COMMAS to separate the clauses. It is also possible to write/say the result first, but you do not need a comma.

  • I get one done in a second if you wait.
  • I have visas in my name if you catch me at the border.
  • I make them all day if you come around here.

Vocabulary

  • paper planes (noun) – a slang expression for visas, which are legal documents for entering, residing and working in foreign countries. Paper planes might also be slang for joints/spliffs, which are cigarettes rolled with marijuana.
  • bona fide (adjective) – A Latin phrase that means authentic or genuine. It is always used immediately before a noun.
  • hustler (noun) – a person who earns money illegally.
  • bong (noun) – a water pipe that is commonly used for smoking marijuana.
  • swagger (noun) – If somebody has swagger, they are very sophisticated in fashion and behavior.
  • burner (noun) – an inexpensive, pre-paid mobile phone. Criminals often use these phones and then throw them away to evade the police.

Grammar: ‘Until’ and ‘By’

You’re making some green?
But not for glamour or fashion.
I’m stacking cash until I can get Moms a mansion.

Until is a common preposition of time, and we use it to express actions that continue to a point in time and stop. Use “until” with the past, present and future.

  • I am 27 years old. I lived with my parents until I was 18. Therefore, I moved out of my parents house nine years ago.
  • He’s working until 9 pm tonight, so I imagine he’ll be very tired.
  • My boss from work will be unavailable until next week, so I can’t ask her for a raise right now.

Many people shorten “until” into ’til or ’till.

A commonly confused preposition of time is by. This word means no later than or before.

  • My professor wants my essay by 5pm today.  It’s 2pm right now, so I only have three hours to write it. Can you drive me to the library?!
  • The flight has been delayed a few hours, but we should be boarding by 9pm. It’s 6pm right now, so I don’t think we have enough time to leave the ariport to play golf.

“The World Is Yours” is the third single from Nas‘s debut album Illmatic, released a month after the album. It is considered by some music critics one of the greatest hip-hop songs ever recorded. The song was produced by Pete Rock—who also sings the song’s chorus—and samples “I Love Music” by Ahmad Jamal and “It’s Yours” by T La Rock. A remix of the song was produced by Q-Tip featuring similar but new lyrics; both it and the original were released by Columbia Records as singles, and promoted with music videos. It reached #13 on the Hot Rap Singles chart in 1994 and is now lauded as one of Nas’s best tracks. The song and its accompanying video pay homage to the film Scarface. “The World is Yours” is also known as one of the foundations of the Jay-Z vs. Nas feud because Jay-Z sampled it on his first single “Dead Presidents”, using one of Nas’s lines as the chorus (taken verbatim from Wikipedia).

I’m out for dead presidents to represent me.

Grammar: Possessive Pronouns

Whose world is this?
The world is yours. The world is yours.
It’s mine. It’s mine. It’s mine.

Mine, yours, his, hers, ours and theirs are possessive pronouns. They are very similar to possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her, our, their), but they are not used with a following noun.

  • This is my jacket. The jacket is mine.
  • I cannot find your phone. I found my phone, but I cannot find yours.
  • Can he borrow your car? His is broken.
  • He does not have his keys. Does she have hers?
  • They ordered dinner after us, but they got their food first. Why haven’t we gotten ours yet?
  • Your children are noisy, but their children are worse! At least you don’t have theirs.

Grammar Tips:

  • Do not use articles with mine, yours, etc.
    • Do you have your keys. I can’t find the mine.
    • This is not my jacket. This jacket is a yours.
  • We do not normally use its as a possessive pronoun.

II” in sound and content, featuring a dark piano loop and gritty street narratives, and also uses the chorus from that song in a verse (taken verbatim from Wikipedia).

There’s a war going on outside no man is safe from.
You could run, but you can’t hide forever

Sir Mix-a-Lot is one of the most fun-loving and energetic producers. He is based in Seattle, Washington, and he formed the Nastymix Record Label with DJ Nasty Nes. He is most well known for his Grammy award-winning single “Baby Got Back”, which was released in 1992. In this song, Sir Mix-a-Lot describes his obsession with women’s butts. Its blatantly sexual lyrics caused controversy, and MTV briefly banned the music video. Despite its initial shock, “Baby Got Back”  is considered tame by the majority of American people today.

I like big butts, and I cannot lie
You other brothers can’t deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty-bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung

Grammar: Making Comparative Adjectives

Use comparative adjectives when you want to compare two people, places or things. Comparative adjectives describe the differences between nouns.

For most adjectives with one syllable, simply add r or er.

  • old – older
  • fast – faster
  • late – later
  • nice – nicer
  • big – bigger
    • If the adjective ends with a consonant-vowel-consonant, then double the final consonant.

If the adjective has two syllables AND ends with ~y, then omit ‘y’ and add ~ier.

  • pretty – prettier
  • happy – happier
  • busy – busier

For most adjectives with two or more syllables, add ‘more‘ and do not add ~er.

  • modern – more modern
  • expensive – more expensive
  • beautiful – more beautiful

Some adjectives are irregular and have special comparative forms. You must memorize these special irregular adjectives.

  • good – better
  • bad – worse
  • far – farther
  • has/have + more

Using Comparative Adjectives

If you want to compare two people, places or things, use the comparative adjective and than

Subject + Verb + Comparative Adjective + Than + Noun

  • East coast hip-hop is better than west coast hip-hop. I enjoy east coast hip-hop more than the west coast.
  • Lil Wayne is older than  Drake. Lil Wayne was born in 1982, and Drake was born in 1986.
  • The Notorious B.I.G. was fatter than 2Pac. 2Pac was very athletic and  fit, and the Notorious B.I.G. always wore size XL.
  • Twista is faster than Snopp Dogg. It’s true. Snopp Dogg is a slow and chill rapper, but Twista is very fast!
  • N.W.A. was more violent than De La Soul. N.W.A. often rapped about the violence of inner city life in Los Angeles. De La Soul did not rap about the violence of inner city life.
