Learn English Grammar: Past Perfect with Ice Cube

July 4, 2013 by Stephen Mayeux

Ice Cube is an American rapper from South Central Los Angeles, and he is considered one of the founding members of gangsta rap. His lyrics are unflinchingly honest, and his songs usually revolve around the danger and violence of the inner city of Los Angeles. In “It Was a Good Day”, Ice Cube describes a day where everything is perfect and goes extremely well.

Just waking up in the morning. Got to thank god.
I don’t know, but today seems kind of odd.

Grammar: Past Perfect

I was glad everything had worked out.

Use the past perfect in order to say something happened before another action in the past.

Subject + had + past participle.

Subject + had + not + past participle.

Had + subject + past participle?

  •  I had never heard such great hip-hop before I listened to Ice Cube.
  • She did not call me because she had lost her phone.
  • My trip to New York was great! My wife knew the city so well because she had lived there several years ago.
  • Had he studied English before he moved to the United States?
